Sergenian’s Goes Green With Wisconsin’s 1st Comprehensive Carpet Reclamation Program
Last year, across the country, over 225 million pounds of used carpet was reclaimed by StarNet® Commercial Flooring Cooperative, diverting it from landfills. This option has never before been available to Wisconsin residents, but now Sergenian’s Floor Coverings is unveiling a carpet reclamation program through their partnership with StarNet®. As of February 1, 2007, Sergenian’s will guarantee that any carpet it removes from a commercial or residential space will not end up in a landfill. This carpet will instead be routed to a plant which reconstitutes carpet fiber, recycling it into energy and new carpet material.
“Sergenian's has been working to develop this program locally for a number of years, and we’re proud to say it is the first comprehensive carpet reclamation effort in Wisconsin,” says Jim Garner, CEO of Sergenian’s. “Any carpet we remove is guaranteed not to end up in a landfill, and we are hopeful that other flooring contractors will follow our lead in this initiative.”
After the used carpet is removed, it is sent to a dedicated reclamation center. From there, the material is separated into the products that can currently be reclaimed. The small portion that can’t be reclaimed is currently being converted from waste to energy.
“We are very pleased Sergenian’s is taking the initiative and aggressively promoting the reclamation of post-consumer carpet in Wisconsin,” says Fred Williamson, Director of Special Projects at StarNet® Commercial Flooring Cooperative. “After Sergenian’s does their part and reclaims the old carpet, we will use our resources to reconstitute the material into brand new nylon carpet or convert it from waste into energy.”
